Beter Bokes: Electron transport through atomic nanojunctions: from simple models to realistic simulations

There are various theoretical approaches to modeling electronic transport through atomic nanojunctions, each at different level of sophistication. First, there is an intuitively appealing description of coherent transport in terms of wavepackets in model 1D potential, where as the central quantity is identified with the probability of transmission of electrons across the junction. This transmission plays also the key role in determination of the conductance of a realistic models of nanojunctions within the ab initio methods. The energy-dependent features of transmission are intimately related to the local electronic structure of the junctions. Finally, due to the complexities of the electron-electron and/or electron-phonon interaction, there is a need of the formulation without the need of a one-particle picture in mind. One such possibility - the calculation of the conductance from the density-response function - will be introduced. All the above approaches will be demonstrated on an example of electronic transport through Al/AlOx/Al interface.
